"Even with solid steel, people think, "Oh, it can rust away." It can't. The sculptures are like those anchors that you see in front of restaurants in the Hamptons. They have a protective shield of rust. In my most recent work, I'm working in stainless steel, which is an amazing material that—even outside—doesn't change at all—forever. You can still see the polishing marks that David Smith made in his work in the 50s. You can see it exactly as he' did it. There's something about life and death about that."
